Calm Skies: No Magnetic Storms Expected on July 30

Thursday, July 30, 2026, promises to be favorable in terms of space weather. According to the geomagnetic activity monitoring service magnitca.com, no magnetic storms will affect Earth during the day, and magnetic field fluctuations will remain within normal limits.

The planetary Kp index, which reflects the level of disturbances in the magnetosphere, will remain mostly between 1.7 and 3.3 throughout the day. The calmest period will be in the morning: around 6:00 a.m., the index will drop to 1.7. A slight increase in activity is expected in the evening—reaching 3.3 around 9:00 p.m.—but this value still corresponds to a calm background rather than a storm. As a reminder, a magnetic storm is only considered to be occurring when the Kp index reaches 5 or higher.

These calm conditions are also confirmed by related solar wind parameters: its speed remains at around 368 km/s, which is normal, and the vertical component of the interplanetary magnetic field (Bz) is approximately –1.4 nT. The data is updated every five minutes based on observations from the U.S. NOAA SWPC.

The day before, on July 29, conditions were also calm—the maximum Kp index did not exceed 3.0. However, the following day, July 31, forecasters predict a slight increase in geomagnetic activity: in the first half of the day, the Kp index may rise to 4.3. This is what’s known as an elevated background level, close to the storm threshold, so people who are sensitive to changes in space weather should pay particular attention to the end of the week.

Overall, however, there is no cause for concern on July 30: the day will pass without any magnetic storms. On July 30, 2026, the geomagnetic situation will remain calm: the maximum Kp index will not exceed 3.3, and forecasters do not predict any significant magnetic storms. Those sensitive to weather changes can breathe a sigh of relief.
